Our Weekend + TBB Asks: Holiday Edition

Monday, December 3, 2018

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Are you getting into the holiday spirit? I saw a lot of friends' photos over the weekend of them picking out their Christmas tree, or decorating their house, or just generally getting festive (Isn't that such a fun word by the way? One of my favorites).

We had a great weekend, and a super busy one. We celebrated C's FIFTH birthday with her pals, and the following day celebrated her sweet friend's birthday too. It's safe to say there was a lot of fun and a lot of cake. ;) Speaking of cake, C's grammy (my mother-in-law) home-made that unicorn cake - isn't it adorable?

I had wanted to share a few more posts than I did last week (it was quiet around here), but between birthdays, work, fighting off yet another cold, etc., it just didn't happen. And that's ok, because there's always this week, right? We've got a lot on deck, including ideas for giving back with your kids this season (sort of a reverse advent calendar) and a gift guide for men (always the trickiest people to buy for).

I'm kicking off the week by joining a fun link-up hosted by The Blended Blog all about - you guessed it - the holidays. Would love to know your answers to these questions!

1. Candy Canes? Yes or No? I have actually never been a big fan of candy canes, or peppermint candy in general (although I love the smell), but I love them for decorating and the kids love them so I guess the answer is... yes and no!

2. Christmas morning early riser or sleep in? Early riser for life!

3. Did you shop on Black Friday? I usually get out in the early-ish morning with my cousin (hi Gina!) -- we have our little tradition of grabbing coffee and snacks and hitting Target, the outlets, and the mall. This year I was at home with my little family on Black Friday morning so I didn't get out, but I did order a few things online on Thanksgiving night!

4. Christmas tree up in November? My Christmas tree isn't usually up in November - we usually do the first weekend of December or so - but this year I was in the spirit early so we decorated the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.

5. Do you get holiday ideas from Pinterest? Here and there. I think it's really useful for Elf on the Shelf ideas (because I'm the worst at that!), and I love to look at photos of holiday decorating but I don't really use them, just admire them.

6. Christmas Glam or Ugly Sweater? I'm up for either! Both are fun in their own ways.

7. Stocking stuffers wrapped or unwrapped? Wrapped! The stocking was always (and is still) my favorite part, with all these tiny little surprises all wrapped up. So much fun!

8. Traditional or modern Christmas songs? I love both, but I think traditional Christmas songs have my heart. But I'll never turn down a little Mariah Carey or Michael Buble.

9. Fruitcake? Yes or no? Is there anyone on this Earth who likes it? Serious question! Haha

10. Is your Christmas shopping finished? Almoooost there!

11. Is there snow in December where you live? There usually is! January and February tend to be the snowiest months in the Northeast, but we've already had our fist little snow storm (in November) so I wouldn't be surprised if we see another this month.

12. Classic show: A Charlie Brown Christmas or Rudolph? Charlie Brown! My girls love him too, now, so it's really fun to share this old favorite with them.

  1. No one likes fruit cake. Haha. I love Charlie Brown too. It is a classic. Love Michael Buble!!! So I have to ask, how many people did you invite to the birthday party? We want to do a small party, if a party at all. But I don't want the girls feeling left out and that we don't want to celebrate them.

    1. Haha, I know! I will be shocked if I find someone who says "I love fruit cake!" ;) I think we ended up with a little over 30 at C's party this year (including adults -- I think it was 17 kids including my own), which is about typical. Usually it's 30-40 including kids and parents. Most of our closest friends have kids now, and then we invited C's few best buds from school. By the time you add in us and grandparents, we're pretty up there. This was our first party out of the house, and while it was probably a BIT more expensive, it was really nice not having to worry about cleaning and accommodating a large crowd here!

  2. Happy 5th birthday to your sweet girl. Your MIL did an AMAZING job on that cake. Does she do cakes often for other people? If not, she totally could turn it into a job!!! Your comment on the fruit cake question is the best, ha! Happy Monday!

    1. Thank you so much! She did do a wonderful job, and it was tasty too! She doesn't but I agree, she totally could. :) Thanks for your sweet words. Have a great rest of the week!

  3. 'Festive' IS a great word! And I am totally with you on the stockings - I love finding that last little wrapped gift stuck in the toe. C's cake was utterly fantastic! That icing looked delicious but the design itself if so cute - I bet she had a great day. I'm also the same on the music - classics plus Buble plus Mariah. I love her 'O Holy NIght' and Buble's 'Holly Jolly Christmas' the best :) J xx

    1. I am not surprised you appreciate fun words as much as I do. :) C really did have a great day -- as we were leaving, she said "mommy that was the best birthday ever!" and it made my heart feel like exploding. xo!

    1. Thank you so much -- I thought it turned out "Pinterest-worthy," as I told her. :) Classics plus those artists are the very best in Christmas music. Could listen to it on repeat forever. ;)
