A Rainy Weekend + This Week's Menu + An Important Announcement

Monday, October 29, 2018

First, I need to acknowledge the horrific shooting that occurred over the weekend at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA -- the state where I am from. So many lives lost to such senseless hate and violence. I just don't understand it and never will, but I hope to always be a source of love and light and teach my kids, our next generation, to be the same.

How was your weekend? It was pretty dreary weather here, which fit perfectly with our plans to do absolutely nothing. Haha, but really, we mostly stayed in and relaxed and our colds are all feeling much better so I'd count a low-key weekend as a win!

Saturday we played, got some things done around the house, made chili in the crockpot and the girls made some cornbread to go along with it, and during Hadley's nap I made a quick run to Trader Joe's (which, by the way -- TJ's on a Saturday afternoon is a little brutal). I did find some yummy new things to try, including these iced coffee dessert bars. Yes, yes please. Sign me up!

Saturday night after the girls were in bed I took out the Christmas gifts I have for them so far to sort through and get a handle on things. I started picking up a few things here and there really early this year, as I don't want to be grabbing things last minute if possible and would just like the holiday season to be as stress free and FUN as possible. Have you started any holiday shopping yet or are you thinking... this lady's nuts!

After that, Steve and I started the new season of Making a Murderer. Have you seen it? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Yesterday we did even more playing, more cleaning, Steve painted the ceiling in Hadley's room, I placed a grocery order for pick-up this afternoon, and Carrington and I played Candy Land. When we first started, I was winning and she nonchalantly said "Mom, I think we should just play without these silly cards. I don't care for them." I had to laugh, but then we had a little talk about being a good sport, and not a sore loser. ;)

Layla has the right idea for a Sunday morning.

Later after nap we went to Red Robin for dinner. The girls are at an age where eating out is actually relatively easy again (I totally just jinxed it), and it's just so much fun to be out in the world doing our thing with these two little people by our sides. Not to say that they don't still have their moments out and about -- because they definitely do -- but it just feels a little easier right now. Oh, and in honor of Halloween week, I found this gem of a picture. Third grade me (I think?) was beyond excited to be Kimberly.

On to this week's menu (and don't miss the important announcement below!):

Monday - Chili and bread leftovers

Tuesday - Taco bowls (ground beef, rice, roasted corn, black beans and cheese in a tostada bowl)

Wednesday - Homemade pizza (with garlic and herb crust from TJs!) and salad

Thursday - Pesto pasta with chicken sausage and a side of sautéed brussels

Friday - Tomato soup with bread/spanakopita (because the craving struck at TJs)

Saturday - Leftovers

Sunday - Out

And, an exciting announcement: Stay tuned tomorrow for the October "Women Who Inspire" profile -- I can't wait for you to meet her!

 Happy Monday, friends!

    1. Oh, they really are! I kind of accidentally (haha) started picking up some things early on as I saw them and now I think I'm basically finished. I'm hoping it will save my sanity a little in a month or so! Hope you have a great week! :)

  2. Chili and corn bread is my favorite this time of year. I need to try those coffee bars on my next TJ run. I'm really impressed you've started your Christmas shopping - I usually shop early but not this early. I need to get to it though with a baby coming in just a couple weeks!

    1. One of my favorites too -- total comfort food and makes the house smell ahh-mazing! Definitely give the coffee bars a try! They were so refreshing. As for shopping, I'm definitely earlier than usual... for some reason I had it on my mind really early on and just picked up things as I saw them. I'm trying not to go too crazy this year either!

  3. I think I'll just steal this entire menu for our week as well ;) everything sounds so good! I need to start planning our meals out by the week again. LOVE that picture of you (and I also had a wallpaper border in the middle of my walls growing up ;) ). & I just started thinking about Christmas shopping too! Never too early--I've been known to buy Christmas gifts in July if I happen upon something I think someone will like.

    1. Haha, by all means, steal it -- I'm pretty psyched for it! ;) It's actually a little sad how much I look forward to meal planning. It's turned into "me time," which I'm pretty sure is how I know I'm getting old. I'm the same way with Christmas shopping! For some reason, I almost always buy the first gift in July too. :)

  4. That chili looks to die for, and so do those latte bars - right up my street! Can I pop round for some with some wine?! It is great to hear you say that your girls are now little partners in crime when you go out to eat, it is wonderful when they get like that. Christmas presents already - WOW! That is hyper early. I know people are doing it here too as so many things are getting picked through in the shops, but I leave that until nearer the time. Still, impressive how organised you are! I am guessing they are at the age where you will have to be super covert and hide them really well?! J xx

    1. Oh, I SO wish you could pop over for some chili, cornbread, coffee bars, and wine. Yes please! I am super early and honestly, I think I'm pretty much done with the girls. It just feels good to know they're done and focus on the other people on my list. I'm hoping to enjoy the season as much as possible and with the least amount of stress as possible! And I desperately need a better hiding spot... so if you have any good ideas, send them my way! ;) xo

    1. That is a bummer! We had a pretty nice day here, but chilly/windy. I guess what can we expect since November is upon us? You should try the latte bars for sure... so tasty and a great way to end a meal!

  6. My heart just breaks. I will never understand it and why things like this have to happen. It makes me want to try so much hard with teaching my kids the right things. On another note, those low-key weekends end up being the best. We didn't do much either and it felt amazing. I don't think you're crazy at all! We started shopping too and I hope to have majority of it done before baby boy gets here because if I can't get it online this year, then it's not happening lol. Sierra Beautifully Candid

  7. I am still very saddened by the shooting last week. It totally breaks my heart and makes me fear for my children in school. Ugh. So I am watching Making a Murderer season 2. I am on episode 5 and loving it. I also NEVER want to live in Wisconsin after watching what I have so far. So crooked. Ugh. I can't wait for chili. I totally need to add it to my list.
