Five on Friday: Choosing Joy

Friday, August 10, 2018

Afternoon, y'all! ;)

What are you up to this weekend? I'm so excited because it's our annual "family weekend" when we spend some time with my aunts, uncles, and cousins. It started as a tradition of back-to-school shopping (while the boys camped) when we were just little kids, and we've been making it a point to get together on the same weekend in August ever since. Now the back-to-school shopping is for our kids! Life is crazy.

Jumping into this week's Five on Friday...

1. Praying for Charlotte. If you've been around the blog scene for any amount of time, chances are you're familiar with Liz from Smidge of This. I've been following along with her adventures since I first started reading blogs, about eight years ago. She has three very young children, and her middle child, Charlotte, is the same age as my Hadley. Charlotte was just diagnosed with Leukodystrophy, a rare, incurable, and terminal illness.

Though I have never met Liz in person, I am one of so many who are familiar with her warmth, positivity, and genuineness, and I have shed tears for her little girl and her entire family. Truthfully, I cannot comprehend what they are facing, but I know they are doing so with as much strength and grace as any of us could ever hope to have. If you'd like to follow along on their journey (their mission is JOY for their precious daughter), you can do so on her Instagram account: @charlottesjoy

2. Also praying for Joanne. My sweet friend, Joanne of The Europa Fox, also recently revealed a loss on her IG account and my heart breaks for her. She is truly the nicest person you'll meet, and I have been thinking of her and hoping she can find comfort, peace, and eventually joy. Hugs, Joanne.

3. Two lunch ideas. I know I've shared before that lunch is the toughest meal around here for me (the girls have their staples!) -- I usually end up grabbing a handful of goldfish and a string cheese or something. Wanting to nourish myself a little more mid-day so I don't end up feeling sluggish by late afternoon, I recently have been into these two meals:

-Chopped salads (you can make your own, but I have been buying the bagged chopped salad kits and splitting them up for two lunches or so! So easy and delicious!).

-Riced cauliflower and black beans. Rice and black beans is one of my favorite meals (thanks Cuban roots!), and I'm not a big meat eater so black beans are a good source of protein for me. To make it more low-carb, I buy steam-in-bag riced cauliflower and then just pour heated black beans on top. So tasty, filling, and healthy!

4. Unicorn jammies. I had some questions about the girls' unicorn jammies I posted on Instagram recently. I got them here, but they were only $13 for the 2-pack when I bought them, so keep an eye out for another sale (they always have one!).

5. Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. This weekend I went to my mom's hometown for the first time in my life and it was a wonderful experience. I also downloaded the Calm and Bliss apps because I really need positivity in my life. I'm joining to the prayers, I hope God gives them his strength and peace through this.

    1. Wow, that sounds like a weekend well spent! Where is your mom's hometown? I'll have to check out those apps -- they sound soothing. :) Thanks for stopping by Natalia! xo
